Whilst we are in the business of selling African Grey Parrots we have a responsibility to ensure that our birds go to good homes and that their new owners are well informed about what they are taking on. Here are a some points to consider before buying an African Grey Parrot. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

All too many of these beautiful animals end up in Parrot rescues so please do not consider buying one if you can't make the necessary commitment!

How much time do you have to play with you parrot?

African Greys love play and human interaction and your parrot will take up much of your time. We recommend at least an hour of bonding and play time each day.

We often sell parrots to people who work from home so get to spend all day with their birds. This is an excellent situation for both owner and pet.

Do you have young children?

Our African Greys are hand reared in a family environment and have regular contact with children as young as four. Our children are however very used to parrots and have been taught to be gentle and not to make sudden movements.

It is important to excercise caution when children are around African Greys. Parrots are capable of delivering very painful bites. The children / parrot relationship is one that must be built slowly over time.

Do you go on regular holidays?

It is important to have someone you trust to feed and look after your parrot when you go away on holiday. If friends or family aren't an option there are many people out there that provide parrot boarding services, some breeders also offer these services. Check with your breeder when you buy your parrot.

Are others in the household willing to get involved with the bird?

A lot is made of African Greys being one person birds. If you want your African Grey to be well behaved and bond with more than one person in the household you must ensure that others put in the time and effort to win the birds trust.

How old are you? Would there be someone to look after the bird if you were not around?

African Greys commonly live between 50 and 60 years so careful consideration must be taken to decide whether or not you can make that sort of commitment. Would there be anyone to look after your parrot if you weren't around?

Can you afford the ongoing costs?

The expense does not stop when you buy your parrot. Calculate the cost of food, supplements, insurance and more to be sure that owning an African Grey is viable for you.

Do you know of a local avian vet?

Research local vets and try to find one that specialises in avian care.

Do you or anyone in your house suffer from asthma?

African Grey Parrots produce a fine powder when preening which can aggravate asthma. If you or someone in your household suffer from asthma or other respiratory conditions you should consider purchasing a good air purifier.
